Microlearning: First Aid For Pet Parents
Background
To address the need for accessible, practical pet first aid knowledge among pet owners, I developed a microlearning course focused on key first aid skills for cats and dogs. I designed the course to equip learners with the necessary knowledge and skills to handle common pet emergencies effectively.
Instructional Design Approach
- Needs Analysis: I conducted surveys and interviews with pet owners and veterinarians to identify common knowledge gaps and emergencies that pet owners frequently encounter. This data informed the course content and structure.
- Microlearning Strategy: Given the urgency and practicality required in emergency situations, I designed the course as a series of short, focused modules. Each module targeted a specific skill or knowledge area, enabling learners to absorb and apply the information quickly.
- Interactive Components: For enhanced engagement and retention, the course included interactive elements such as quizzes, drag-and-drop exercises for identifying first aid kit items, and video demonstrations for hands-on skills like bandaging and pet restraint.
- Scenario-Based Learning: Realistic scenarios were incorporated to help learners analyze and apply their knowledge. For example, one scenario involved recognizing poisoning symptoms and deciding on the appropriate first aid steps.
- Evaluation and Feedback: At the end of each module, learner assessments were integrated to evaluate comprehension and application of skills. Feedback was provided to guide learners on areas for improvement.
Course Development Tools
I developed this course using Vyond for animated video content and Adobe Captivate for creating interactive modules. I chose these tools for their ability to create visually engaging and user-friendly learning experiences.
Outcomes
The course successfully met its learning objectives, as evidenced by positive learner feedback and high assessment scores. Pet owners reported increased confidence in handling pet emergencies, and veterinarians noted improved client preparedness.
Reflection and Future Improvements
While the course was well-received, ongoing updates will ensure it remains current with best practices in pet first aid. Future iterations may include expanded content on exotic pets and integration with mobile platforms for on-the-go learning.
